3+1 Arhitektid

About Us

3+1 architects is a Tallinn based practice committed to architectural design and urban planning as well as researching and analyzing contemporary processes in both fields.
The office was founded in 1994 by three architects – Markus Kaasik, Andres Ojari and Ilmar Valdur – all graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, Estonian Academy of Arts in the same year, 1992.
All three are also teaching architecture at the Academy of Arts since 1995.
Since its founding 3+1 architects have actively taken part in architectural competitions in Estonia as well as abroad. The most notable winning projects have been Estonian Embassy in Vilnius (1996), Library in Pärnu (1999), Multifunctional building in Tallinn (2007), design of the permanent exposition of the Estonian National Museum (2009) and hotel in Rakvere (2011).
The close co-operation with other architects or interdiciplinary practices has been one of their clear strategies implemented in competition projects as well as in other works. They have collaborated with professionals from various disciplines like artists, landscape architects, architecture critics, curators, film directors, etc. Each project team is based on the given commission providing a flexible strategy for dealing with the constantly changing design problems.
Their works has been presented in various exhibitions in London, Paris, Napoli, Rotterdam, Rome, Moscow, Ljublana, Bordeaux and published in different international architectural magazines and books.
Their work has been awarded four times by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
